Bleu Orleans Transformation
Liner notes by Mike Gourrier
“This is the third presentation from the outstanding New Orleans based group…Bleu Orleans. I have been attuned to them since their first release in 2000. As Senior Programmer at New Orleans’ world famous WWOZ-FM Radio I presented their debut recording on my weekly radio show, and had the opportunity to emcee for them at various venues around town. The group was composed of formally trained Jazz Musicians, and co-led by Trumpeter, Edward Anderson and pianist/keyboardist Darrell Lavigne. Their second CD, Bleu2 came out in 2006 to great reviews shortly after Hurricane Katrina had inflicted massive devastation to the “Birthplace of Jazz”.
Now in 2013 comes “Transformation”. An obvious higher level of maturity that is obvious to one who is familiar with this aggregation. The compositions, written by Darrell and Edward represent a coming out of the aftermath of Katrina and profess a statement of change manifesting a resilient and defiant tone in the positive creative spirit manifested in all of their writings.
The current group of local and guest artists pool their collective talents to showcase a musical message that is authentic New Orleans and rich in the heritage of the area. I review numerous releases in my current capacity and was thoroughly pleased when I got the opportunity to delve in to the latest from Bleu Orleans. The level of musicianship is of the highest level and I can honestly say that every track is a winner. I am sure that you will concur after listening to “Transformation” that it conveys a current and timely statement that the tradition of great New Orleans music is alive in this release today.”
